Project 3

lasseter_3_1 from Julia Lasseter on Vimeo.

For this assignment I decided to use frosting as my material. I mixed the frosting with some vegetable oil in order to give it a sleeker look. I used a little bit of violet and kelly green dye to dye the frosting. First, I built up the subject using the frosting to make it into a flower. Then, I erased and recreated parts to show the frosting in movement. The biggest challenged I faced was working with the material. Even though I had practiced using it earlier, it was still a bit difficult to work with for the project. The main issue was trying to get the shapes right. Other than that, it was interesting to learn a new painting technique.

For my project, I want to have a rose bloom into a graceful ballet dancer. I want to evoke the beauty of a rose in bloom and a ballet dancer moving.

Self Critique

A Guinea Pig's Life

I originally just wanted to do a stop-motion of paper cut outs of a guinea pig grabbing an apple and dragging it back to his igloo. But after the critique from last week, I decided to expand that idea by having him also drink water and then have him seen on the toilet. The main source of this idea is from my love of owning pet guinea pigs and being able to convey just how silly and adorable they can be. I wanted my audience to express their awe or laugh at this guinea pig's antics, much like how I do with my own furry friend.
The synopsis of this story is that a guinea pig is seen in his cage, drinking and eating like how one normally does. But then the audience is able to take a peek inside his igloo, where guinea pigs like to hide and sleep, and see him on the toilet reading a newspaper as he does his business. The guinea pig spots the audience and then the film concludes with the guinea pig looking through his cage bars to stare at the audience before disappearing. The theme of this project is about how it's like a guinea pig is in their own little world that we are able to see glimpses of.
The strengths of my film would have to be the aesthetic of it; the look and design of these paper cut outs. For the most part, the timing is decent and the movement of the actual pieces flows nicely. But, some areas need a pause for a little longer than what was given. And the guinea pig's face is hard to see with such a dark paper against black paper. It'll be easy enough to just add the frames to make a longer pause and the guinea pig can be given some kind of a white marking on his face so his expressions are easier to see.
I discovered that when making this film on 24fps, it's important to move the assets from position to position as slowly as possible in order for everything to run decently. There are a lot of parts that move too quickly because I didn't take into to consideration how stop-motion worked. But after this project, I see now how to make an even better stop-motion film.

Project 2 Idea redone

My project will be about the day and the life of a guinea pig. Mainly a guinea pig coming out of his igloo to eat an apple.

My statement:
My project is about how the night comes to life. I want my project to express this through a starry night sky with a full moon. And along with that will be fireflies twinkling and drifting along as audio plays in the background. After a duration, the fireflies will fly around towards the right side. The scene fades out and goes to black. Then, a firefly appears close up, flying along. While it flies, a bat swoops in and carries the firefly off. The sources I plan to use for this project include an image of a full moon, a firefly, cricket chirps, and piano music. The flickering lights in the sky are made by me. The meaning behind this project is that I want to create this sense of awe while watching the glowing lights against a dark sky, only for the end to be a sudden reminder of what lurks at night. In order to make this project, I used many sources from various sites that allowed the use of reusing images. For example, the background is from two different images: a source for the landscape and a source for the starry night sky. I just combined the two layers using masking. The floating fireflies were just stippling with the brush tool. And the music was found online, along with the cricket chirps. Together, I used these materials to emphasis the beauty of the night but also the potential danger that looms.

Research and response for project 2

After viewing the videos, Gains + Losses seems to be close to what I had in mind for my project. I wanted to deal more with depression and how it affects people in their lives. I wanted to do either traditional water colors or a digital water color style. Mainly the project will be centered around a girl that physically shows what it feels like to have depression.
